9/05/11 From Poverty to Plenty

The room broke out into a fit of laughter when over and over the comment of how someone who was one a beautiful woman was countered with “she doesn’t look the same anymore”, or “you wouldn’t recognize her now”.  Of course they didn’t look the same!  These women were either well north of seventy, or they were in the ground.  No makeup artist, whether they worked at MAC or as a mortician could hide that kind of age.
When the laughter subsided the talk went back to family, after all, that’s what this trip was all about.  Both Paolo and my mother made the same comment; that their children had left the house and that there were now too many rooms and not enough people.  Such a strong departure from people who grew up in poverty with many families under the same roof, oftentimes with many people in one room.
One of the signs of hard work and success it seems is an empty house.
